Don't be scared! You'll learn so much going through the process (and you've already been writing for 3.5 years) and even if you don't pass the first time, you'll get great feedback to learn from and the second attempt is free too! It's absolutely worth studying and going for it to earn that certification that will give you the confidence to market yourself as a professional writer. You can do it!

Stephanie! Thank you so much! I am one-year into my first position after gaining my second A.A.S. I work in the Work-Based Learning department of a community college, and in my role I continually help students update their resumes in preparation for their first employment opportunity after graduation. I do this ALL the time, but I like Sharon, am terrified to complete the certification test.

Discussion this Week

Good afternoon! I am looking forward to the first discussion on June 4th. I assume this is still taking place, correct?

I wonder if starting a new business might be an appropriate topic. Or, will most professionals be well beyond that point? I am in the midst of starting my own career coaching/resume-writing business. Finally. :)

Thank you!

All!
Well, all of the topics mentioned thus far (fear of failing the certification exam AND starting a new business) are all relevant to me and my current station in life, so I'm super excited for this discussion! I love a win-win situation

I would like to also pose a discussion on Resume Writer self-promotion tactics - more of a critique than a discussion. I'm growing weary of the cookie-cutter LinkedIn posts with the emojis and vague lists of ambiguous advice. Must we echo one another in canon so we appear relevant? I think there should be more collaborative work amongst resume writers.
We all get Resume Brain, right? All the verbs begin to sound dull and you forget the word for "to do a thing"? (The word was 'action' and yes, it's a real-life example)

I recently reached out to another PARW/CC member for a Resume "Consult" and it went really well! I needed help figuring out the piece of information I was missing that I needed to finish a project, and Alana helped, and I was able to finish. Do others do this? Or is it really just 1000000 individual islands (Resume Writers) all sort of out for themselves? (Or are only willing to help if you're not targeting their client base)....it's not like there's a shortage of people who need resumes.
But then again, I don't go for Executive-Level clients for various reasons which may involve socialism and anxiety (in no particular order).

Make of that what you will.
I'm here to learn and disrupt.
Thanks!
Rebekah

Rebekah,

As for verbs beginning to sound dull, I do relate to that feeling. It could be a pride thing on my part, but I don't want to fall into the tired trap of regurgitating the same tired bullet points. With workforce development clientele, there is a lot of retail, manufacturing, supply chain distribution, paraprofessional healthcare, food service, and some office support. I have considered reaching out for help am reluctant. With only 3.5 years in this space, there is not a lot I can offer in return. I am not a creative type. I am a pretty linear, one dimensional kind of thinker so need much help in "telling the career story" which will not put the reader in a resume-induced stupor. Would also like to see a comparison of resume certifications between the different certifying bodies along with the pros, cons, and in-betweens. Would like to also hear feedback on J. Suarez's Fundamentals of Resume Writing.
