Hi all,

As I work with professional students, reverse-chronological resumes are standard. However, I am planning on taking the CPRW exam soon and am trying to become more familiar with the functional resume.

Because of my familiarity with reverse-chronological, I am used to and comfortable with listing particular skills/competencies under specific roles. However, if you decide that a functional resume is a better option for a client, do you need to specify in which context (in which job) the client achieved a certain competency? So, for example, if one of the skills is "Project Management" and the client has been in multiple roles that have allowed them to demonstrate this skill, do you list deliverables/achievements/projects from Job A AND Job B together under that section without specifying which deliverable went with which job? Because I'm so familiar with reverse-chronological, if I saw a skills section with multiple deliverables, I would wonder in what context they were achieved and would want to pair them with the job.

Thank you for your insight!

This article, https://www.jobscan.co/blog/recruiters-functional-resume-format/, explains why recruiters may not particularly care for a functional resume and gives an alternative type, hybrid resume. A hybrid is a combination of a traditional, reverse-chronological resume and a functional resume.

I try to give as much detail as possible on a functional, but if they have lots of experience doing something then the functional is usually not the best option. I agree on the use of a hybrid type resume.

I don't think it is necessary to match the skill with the job. But sometimes I will match a skill with an accomplishment, in which case I may provide the job for context. If a skill is developed over multiple employers I may try to quantity the experience, such as "Equipped with 6+ years of project management experience valued up to $15M. Familiar with vendor coordination, prioritization, PM software, scheduling, budget management, etc. Consistently met budget and deadline targets." Or something like that :-)
