Hello all! I was recently certified as a CPRW in May 2021, but I have been writing resumes professionally since October 2020. I've really enjoyed delving into all of the webinars and resources available to learn more about the craft!

My biggest question that has yet to be answered is: How do we properly craft ATS-compliant resumes? Or rather, what are some trusted resources that other professionals use to test to see if resumes are ATS compliant?

A lot of my research has been contradictory. Use headers and footers, don't use headers and footers. Columns are okay, columns are never okay. I am trying to create a resource of best practices for myself so that I can best help my clients.

Thank you for any and all input provided!

According to what I am learning in the Fundamentals class, you can use headers and footers, just know that nothing in there will be read by the ATS. Also, I believe that horizontal lists are preferred over columns. I don't believe that the ATS's can pick up that formatting.

I am a recruiter currently, and for myself, I rarely use the keyword search function in my ATS. I review every resume myself unless it's a position for which we have gotten a huge response and there are too many applicants to review. In that case, I will use keyword search or even random sampling. However, this rarely happens, especially in today's job market.

Every ATS is different, and there are TONS out there.

If you want to be really safe, you should avoid column formats (ATS reads left to right and top to bottom just as we do, so as it reads, it will combine information from the columns and read things improperly), tables, charts, graphs, pictures, headers and footers, text boxes and tables. As S. Gillis mentioned, you can use headers and footers, but whatever is written there will not be read by ATS. Greg Faherty did a FANTASTIC webinar on this information. It is called "Writing the Perfect Resume" (Nov. 19, 2020) and is located in the Member Library.

Hello All! This is the first time I have looked at this forum or asked a question. As A. Barney noted, there is so much contradictory information. Thank you for A. Barney for asking the same question I have had regarding columns, and thank you S. Gillis and G. Maury for your responses. I will look up Greg Faherty's webinar. In the event he does not address the following, any further clarification would be appreciated!

So, I understand "columns" are a "no," but I guess I am asking what constitutes a column? I have read several resume writing books. All have samples of "award winning resumes," and many of these samples have "bullet point lists" of skills depicted in 3 separate "columns." For instance, resumes have a Skills section, with 12 different skills, depicted in 3 "columns" with 4 bullet points each. They are essentially "columns" but they are not tables, text boxes, etc. It is easier to show than tell, but it is the best I can do in this forum text box! Is what I am describing a prohibited column?

Hello all! I love the feedback on ATS usability. I use Jobscan and TealHQ for my clients. They have similar functionalities, but Jobscan just upgraded their platform, and there are a lot of bugs they need to work out. For example, data is not importing to the correct place or is being omitted altogether. Jobscan does not recognize multiple jobs at the same employer under a normal Resume structure, so the site truncates multiple job duties for various positions under one experience. As well, parenthesis need to be removed from the job description before uploading it, or the platform may not properly scan it. My team is regularly meeting with the Jobscan team to provide feedback on our findings and give input on features we would like to see. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? If so, what are your workarounds? I would love to hear from you.
