My client is in the medical device/technology industry and attends conferences to support their sales team at booths and manage logistics. They plan on continuing to pursue jobs in the same industry. When someone is not an attendee at a conference for professional development, should conference names be included under the job section (vs. generically indicating national and international medical device/technology conferences)? My initial thought was to customize the resume by adding conference names when they would be applicable to a future employer. I welcome any/all insight and suggestions!

Hi K., I'm curious what your client did at the conferences? If it is relevant and doesn't take up valuable real estate I don't see a problem of listing the name of the conference. Hope that helps Clair

Hi K., I think it depends on how much space you have to mention all conference names and also if relevant. And it might be that you mention some names but not all. I realize that may seem inconsistent but I think it depends on what makes the most sense for this client. There might be conference(s) that everyone in the industry knows and therefore I think it's worth mentioning. but maybe other less known ones can focus more on the quantity of conferences the client was managing (per week/month/year... whichever makes sense). For example, when I was in Marketing and handled conferences/shows we did several smaller shows on a weekly basis so it was more about handling a large amount of logistics at one time etc. Yet, the largest show I would mention by name because everyone in the industry attended it and people in the industry know what it takes to prepare for that show (we would plan for it a year in advance). Hope that helps!

Thank you both for sharing your thoughts.

The reason I had asked was due to real estate challenges.

Lisa - your prior experience sounds exactly like the type of work my client does for conferences. I have learned that there is much more to have an engaging booth at a conference than I realized!
