Hello friends!
I am curious how you educate your clients to modify the resume you create for future applications.
It seems that each job posting needs a bit of customization on the resume, and it does take skill to do this smoothly.
I have 1 or 2 ideas, but thought I would ask the professionals first!

Thanks, Tina

I will talk to them about customizing the headline, the skills section, and maybe a word or phrase in the summary paragraph. If you're lucky, they might have, as many as 5-7 accomplishments to pick from for any given position...and they can pick the top three based on the target. Anything more than that and you probably need to have a discussion about staying in their lane.

I had a client who wanted to change careers with years of great experience and numerous accomplishments. I created an accomplishment/project summary that included individual accomplishment statements, identified the position & company associated with the accomplishment/project, and the job type where the accomplishment may apply (based on things they were interested in e.g., accountant, forensic accountant, auditor). This gave her a tool to customize her resume after our work together by swapping accomplishments in/out based on the context of how she would use the resume.

John- That makes total sense and gives them some direction. And your staying in their lane comment is so true!

I also look forward to seeing other responses. ...As for me, I usually talk to them about adjusting the headline, subhead (if there is one), summary, and skills sections. If they've provided a few job description samples for roles they want to apply to, I sometimes use one as an example to show how I would tweak those sections for that role. I also talk to them about reading the job descriptions and checking to see if they use a particular word or phrase that is in the resume but just written differently (not sure if that makes sense but the English language sometimes has 10 ways to say the same thing! so if a JD is using a particular phrase for something we've talked about in the resume, then make those minor adjustments).
