A potential client with over 15 years of extensive IT consulting experience asked how many pages their consulting resume should be. Their resume is currently nine pages long. I am finding conflicting information online. Is there a rule of thumb to follow for consulting resumes?

That's a new one for me. Usually, if I'm dealing with 10+ pages, just by reformatting it I can cut that number down substantially. But as far as what the reader is expecting or why it would be treated any differently than a regular resume...yeah, no idea.

I haven’t worked on many consulting resumes, but for those clients whom I have worked with in this area or trying to get into this area, we did a one-page resume. At the time, I also found conflicting information online, and in general I would agree with John and go with the standard one or two pages. In these few cases, we landed on a one-page resume primarily because my clients were specifically told by their contacts (to whom they would be sending the resume) that their resume should be one page. .... Two other points I recall when working on these (and I cannot say with certainty this is the standard for consulting resumes) we included the GPA if it was above a certain point and a brief line about hobbies or interests. I don't necessarily always include GPA and Hobbies/Interests on my resumes (it varies) but in these few cases the contacts requested that my clients include them.

I agree with John and Lisa. I do understand your dilemma Kerry with so much online information. I have learnt to accept more from reliable sources such as PARWCC, my mentor, and with much less online inputs, and the most important details and language that recruiters want to read. I normally keep the résumé length to one or two pages, occasionally three pages for customers with senior skills and experience of 20+ years.

Hi Kerry, I work full time for a federal government agency, and I freelance as a resume writer. Many of my clients are federal government employees who are transferring from one agency to another. I say that for context. In the federal job application process, it is customary for a resume to be five pages long up to 10 pages. That is because most federal job announcements expect to see an applicant's complete job history since most federal jobs require a security clearance. Security clearances involve background investigations on the applicants, and those investigations go back 7 - 10 years into an applicant's history. I've also seen Curriculum Vitaes (CVs) be up to 9 pages long, but those are typically for positions in academia. I hope this helps.

Hi Kerry, I've also encountered that challenge. Here are some of the practices I have found helpful: 1) condensing job descriptions to high level overviews and minimizing corroborative detail,2) replacing recurring job descriptions with "See job X above" when the responsibilities are identical.3) transforming responsibility lists into success stories by illustrating and quantifying how well the client carried a responsibility out.

The rule of thumb that I use is 2 pages for every 10 years. Timothy makes a great point in suggesting high level overviews to achieve this. If the client has a linkedin page that includes further history I will hyperlink it on the document to allow for a deeper dive if desired by the reader.

Worth mentioning that a resume is all about marketing, the purpose to get an interview. It's the job interview that leads to the job offer. This interesting research was made by The Ladder and suggest a 475-600 word resume on 2 pages.
