The headline to this article pulled me in. Aside from being opposite to the resume writing philosophy I've been taught and believe, the HR person doesn't address dealing with ATSs. "One stellar resume that tells your career story" isn't going to get the bot to identify the candidates for the job posting.
Comments from like minds and different perspectives are welcomed!

She has a very simplified approach that probably works fine for some people. I'm not a big believer in the screening power of ATS, but even for a human audience...wouldn't you want to see customized content? Saying it's a waste of time for everyone is just silly.

Each resume I do for clients is uniquely handled. There are also many ways to describe the same experiences. One aspect of how ATS works is using string matching on keywords. The same experience and skills could be described slightly different on the resume and may get missed by the ATS algorithm. I would rather align the language with what the human and ATS are expecting.

Todd, are you saying that you do create a different resume for your client's target jobs each time he/she applies to a different job?

ATS isn't as relevant as most jobseekers and writers think it is. Many employers only use it to store information, not to rank candidates. What we're seeing in HR is that more and more managers want to see every candidate regardless of whether the recruiter says they meet the requirements. So, for jobseekers who are in niche roles or applying to high-level jobs that are less likely to rely on rankings, keywords are much less important than a compelling story. Still, I aim for speaking the employer's language wherever possible.

It's always better to simply be the best at what you do, and in that regard, the TA in the article is correct. If you're the best or one of the best, you can send them whatever kind of résumé you want (or no résumé at all if you're REALLY good).
